THE MESSAGE:

In Canada we witness protests involving our police force and what can be done to improve it. The majority of the complaints deal with the problem of systemic racism against blacks and and  aboriginals. It seems obvious that the situation surrounding the issue  is related to poverty, ethnic gangs, drug wars, guns and smuggling rather than racism. Having said that, we do have our share of bad police work.

Changing behaviours should be one of the immediate answers to dealing with these problems. I believe that the first step to changing behaviours is the elimination of unwanted or unplanned parenthood. A child requires the nurturing love of two committed parents, the comforts of family, school, open and integrated communities that provide a decent  living style, recreation, entertainment  and  favourable employment opportunities for all.

The minorities don’t seem to get anywhere by protests and complaints of systemic racism. They have a right to be angry and disappointed surrounding their plight but the hatred and anger should be replaced by the construct to refrain from criminal and violent behaviours.

From the opposite perspective, society has to realize that hatred begets hatred. when the comfortable middle class people witness the violent or bad behaviours of the underprivileged  in neighbouring communities, anger should be replaced by empathy, understanding and the resolve to provide acceptable employment opportunities, improved life style, and an excellent education  to the poor no matter what their race happens to be.

Some would argue that the plight of minorities regarding the issue of abortion, reveals undercurrents of systemic racism. Why are there more single black moms than  white ones, they ask?

Over the years, our southern neighbours, have made many attempts to deal with the issue of integration and opportunity. Current efforts reveal that many of the problems are connected to behaviours like 'baby mommas’ and single parent families. Is it racist to try to change these behaviours? Should children be exposed to undesirable situations?

GENTRIFICATION,
Is the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste. It has the power to displace low-income families or, more often, prevent low-income families from moving into previously affordable neighbourhoods. This surely adds to the problem of discrimination rather than helping to solve it.

TONY TODAY:

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA):
is a state public development corporation which provides public housing in New York City. It was the first agency in the United States to provide housing for low and moderate-income residents throughout the five boroughs of the city.  These communities are often referred to in popular culture as, the projects.

THE PROJECTS,

They commonly have large income disparities with their respective surrounding neighbourhood or community. Today, these projects in New York City have become synonymous with the dilapidated living conditions many of its more than 400,000 residents have endured in recent years. This was largely due to the ‘crack' epidemic that took over. There were fights everyday and people playing loud music outside of a building to get someone out to fight.

TORONTO

In Toronto’s Burroughs today the media reveals a large increase in shootings and crime. Most of the reports deal with a variety of ethnic minorities. All of the regions have good schools, recreation facilities and community programs. What causes a huge problem?

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Parkdale in Toronto, is rapidly losing access to both the residential and commercial spaces that had allowed the area to flourish. No one at any level of government seems prepared to challenge the businesses that are taking those spaces away. The city’s rubber-stamping of commercial condo projects continues to skyrocket, even while it’s closing down more and more of its own affordable housing stock. How can we trust the city when it blithely defines “affordable housing” as anything that goes for at or below current market rate, which these days is $2,000 month for your average one-bedroom? Ward 14 Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks stated in the news last November. “People in the lowest end of our rental market in downtown Toronto can either move out of the city or become homeless,”  “There is simply no other option available. We’re not building low-income housing as fast as we’re losing it.”

BAD PARENTING:
Where are they failing? I think that the problem arises over a lack of family values. Is it about time to legislate the required characteristics of giving birth to a child?
