MORALITY AND DECISIONS: BLOG # 2277; DEC 18, 2020

THE COMEBACK:

HEY CUTIE WASUP?

THE MESSAGE:

History shows us that In the past there was a simple understanding of how to be a good person. People were surrounded  by temptation. A good person was expected to keep these passions in check.  "just say no to drug use.”

These days that model is out of fashion. It is difficult to change your behavior by simply resolving to do something. If you could do that, being a “good person” would be uncomplicated. Knowing what to choose is not the same as being able to do it.

TONY TODAY:

A quote from the NYT: “Your willpower is not like a dam that can block the torrent of self-indulgence. It’s more like a muscle, which tires easily. Moreover, you’re a social being. If everybody around you is overeating, you’ll probably do so, too.”

Today, psychologists recognize that there are limits to the exercise of free will. There are many things, both external and internal, that are beyond one’s control. Hence the ability to make changes in our lives is not a simple matter. We are creatures of habit many of which are unconscious.

Researchers at Duke University calculated that more than 40 percent of the actions we take are governed by habit, not actual, conscious decisions. You can change the habits of your public relations employees by implementing a “Policy Directive”; for example a series of procedures to deal with a common customer issue. It is possible to change some of your employee's habits through a strategy of substituting an action for an urge. This method has been proven to be unreliable.

A RECOMMENDATION:

If you want to change your life it is necessary to focus on larger issues. Open your mind and soul to the plight of others. You can achieve wonderful things through a commitment to knowledge, understanding and compassion. Replace your ignorance and fear of different cultures and ideas by embracing humanity.

The world needs more people of soul. Impulse needs to be put on hold until we have had the chance to think about our choices.
