As a man enters the mid-life years, there are several possible reasons for the feeling that he and his partner have drifted apart. For women, cheating can feel like a way of finding something new and exciting when the relationship has become predictable and familiar. This sense of disconnection  can happen for a variety of reasons.

• The marriage took place when one or both of the partners were too young and unaware that changes would occur and require new solutions.
• There may be a lack of meaningful communication in the relationship.
• Life may have become dominated by work or looking after children, so time together has become more functional than loving.
• Expressions of love may occur in totally different ways, verbal as opposed to physical.
• Responsibility. An example occurs when one partner feels the other is making all the family choices. The result might be to not care or get involved.
• Self confidence can be an issue when one partner reacts negatively to the other’s behaviour  and choses to attack rather than submit.
• One of the partners feels the necessity of engaging in sex often as a means of finding themselves.
• Perhaps passion in the marriage has waned and rather than depending on trust and honesty with their partner they resort to outside attractions.
• It is possible that one or the other partner is incapable of resisting temptation.
