THE MESSAGE:
If we are truly concerned about the welfare of our students in Ontario, why is it necessary to introduce a conflicting arena of school boards and teacher unions into the mix? Are both entities not supposed to stand for what is best for a child's education? If one wants to make reference to the 'Dark Ages' in the discussion, then we should consider the question, "why do we need unions?"
The President of the ETFO, Sam Hammond says, “We can’t return to the dark ages. We have to prepare students for 2018 and not 1998.”
Since Premier Doug Ford’s government announced it would roll back the sex-ed changes, a coalition of teachers, parents, community groups, medical professionals, faith groups and legal advocacy groups have come together to fight the move. Hammond is calling on Ontario school boards to join the union, insisting “our students deserve as much.”
Hammond declares, “The government’s actions are also in direct conflict with the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. They infringe upon the freedom of speech of teachers to provide proper education to their students.” Seriously? Did he not consider his words carefully? Do I hear him correctly?

SUE ANN LEVY
What exactly is wrong with repealing a sex-ed curriculum that Premier Kathleen Wynne rammed down everyone’s throats with no consultation and which I believe, as an out lesbian, probably pushes the concept of gender identity and same-sex relationships far too early (Grade 3). It’s a distraction from the realities of what is really happening in the classroom — and kids deserve far better.
COALITIONS, PETITIONS, PROTESTS
Whenever a coalition raises its ugly head, it usually consists of self important individuals who band together to emphasize their own importance. This is where 'fake news' comes into play.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath delivered a petition to the legislature signed by nearly 1,800 doctors, nurses, social workers and other health-care providers. The document said that repealing the modernized curriculum puts children’s health at risk by denying them key information about concepts such as consent, safety and inclusivity.
Is it not the mandate of the Ministry of Education in Ontario to establish curricula for schools? Since when does a union have the mandate to over rule decisions?
REALITY
Ontario's Ford PC government announced recently that it was reverting to a 1998 version of the curriculum while consultations are carried out to create a new document. New Education Minister Lisa Thompson indicated that no decisions had been made on whether concepts like consent, cyber safety and gender identity will be taught in classrooms this fall. She stresses that parental involvement and engagement in their child’s education at the school and classroom levels along with teachers is really important.
