YOUR SECRETS ARE SAFE WITH ME. I NEVER LISTEN WHEN YOU TALK.
Here is a simple understanding of how to be a good person. People are stricken by temptation; however, a good person is expected to keep these passions in check. These days that model is out of fashion. It is difficult to change your behavior by simply resolving to do something. If you could, being a “good person” would be uncomplicated. Knowing what to choose is not the same as being able to do it. Our will is not like a barrier we can erect to block the torrents of self-indulgence. We are social beings. If everybody around you is giving in to common urges, you’ll probably do so as well. For catholics today, I expect that ‘confession’ is not really the solution it used to be.
Today, psychologists recognize that there are limits to the exercise of free will. There are many things, both external and internal, that are beyond one’s control. Hence the ability to make changes in our lives is not a simple matter. We are creatures of habit many of which are unconscious.
TONY TODAY:
Some researchers in our century calculated that more than 40 percent of the actions we take are governed by habit rather than actual, conscious decisions. One example is revealed regarding the habits of employees. They can be ruled by the implementation of a 'Policy Directive’, a series of scripts to deal with unhappy customers. It is possible to change some habits through a strategy of substituting an action for an urge.
In private life, this method has been proven to be rather unreliable. If you want to change your life it is necessary to focus on larger issues. Open your mind and soul to the plight of others. You can achieve wonderful things through a commitment to knowledge, understanding and compassion. True leaders and individuals in modern societies can affect improvement and world peace by replacing ignorance and fear of different cultures and ideas by embracing humanity.
