A WOMAN SHINES: BLOG # 2302; FRI JUNE 11,2021

THE COMEBACK:

DO YOU THINK I TALK TOO MUCH?

WELL YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY:

“SILENCE IS GOLDEN AND DUCT TAPE IS SILVER!

THE MESSAGE:

Some research has shown that in adolescence, girls tend to become more dissatisfied with their bodies, whereas boys tend to become more satisfied with their bodies. A girl is much more likely than a boy to post a photo of herself wearing a swimsuit, while the boy is more likely to post a photo relating to something he has done rather than on how he looks. If you don’t like the boy's trophy picture as team captain, no big deal. But if you don’t like the girl's photo of herself in the bikini, she’s more likely to take it personally. She sees one showing off her new bikini and looking hot. She sees another at a party, surrounded by friends and having a blast. She sees another hugging her adorable new puppy and looking like a true friend. She thinks: I’m just sitting here alone, not doing anything. My life sucks!

Not for these two Canadian women from Toronto!

(Wednesday, June 09, 2021) - It was the most watched episode in Shark Tank history when sisters Anna and Samantha Martin from Toronto won over the Shark Tank panel.

A WOMAN ON FIRE!

Katalin Kariko, a Hungarian-born biochemist, is one of the pioneers behind synthetic messenger RNA (mRNA), the technology used by Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna in COVID-19 vaccines. RNA gives cells instructions on how to make proteins. The story of Covid-19 vaccines reveals a momentous and heroic  breakthrough by this special and determined female. She has spent decades of her career researching the therapeutic possibilities of mRNA, a component of DNA that is considered to be one of the main building blocks of life. Through multiple setbacks, job losses, doubt and a transatlantic move, Karikó stood by her conviction: That mRNA could be used for something truly groundbreaking. Now, that work is the basis of the Covid-19 vaccine. Many have proposed that Karikó, now a senior vice president of the Germany-based BioNTech, deserves a Nobel Prize.

A study reveals that Belgian and Polish adolescents are among the least happy in Europe. It went on to conclude that, 15-year-old girls were perhaps the worst off of any group surveyed. In one section titled 'Growing Up Unequal’, the report found that 15-year-old Polish, British and French girls were among those expressing the least satisfaction with their lives. They were the most likely to report a decline in their well-being, and on average, one in five reported poor or fair health. They also displayed an increased dissatisfaction with their bodies. The report noted that, particularly in western and central European countries, this dissatisfaction prevailed despite the fact that actual levels of overweight and obesity remained stable.

The report concluded that policy makers must strive to recognize girls’ unhappiness and find structural solutions. It called for efforts to address the “clear gender-difference issue.”

"I spent the first fourteen years of my life convinced that my looks were hideous. Adolescence is painful for everyone, I know, but mine was plain weird."

TONY TODAY:

WHERE DO WOMEN SHINE IN TODAY’S CANADIAN SOCIETY?

Canada has a longstanding commitment to gender equality. Over the past three years, the federal government strengthened the gender governance framework through developing institutions, policies, tools and accountability structures to promote gender equality and mainstreaming.
Nevertheless, Canadian women and girls live with a heightened risk of violence – often at the hands of someone they know. Gender-based violence can take many forms, including sexual assault and cyber violence.

Here is some reality regarding gender equality according to the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

Leadership: 6 out of 10 women say that they find it difficult to imagine themselves as leaders.
Violence: 160 women and girls were killed in 2020. Every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner.
Sexual assault: Apparently only 5% of these crimes are reported to police.
Income: Studies show that 1.5 million women live on a low income. For every dollar a man makes, women are paid 76.8 cents.
Confidence: the % of girls who say they are confident drops from 36% to 14% between grades 6 and 10.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission declares:
“These disproportionate impacts could have long-term and far reaching consequences. If we are to restore momentum in our efforts to bring about gender equality in Canada, social and economic recovery efforts must take a feminist approach.”

THE QUESTION:

Are some parents  helping to maintain the Gender Gap and not realizing they are doing so?
REALLY???
"My mother just yelled "F*** you all" to my 6-year-old sister and 10-year old cousin. What do I do? I told her calmly that it wasn't okay to say that and she said she didn't need parenting advice.”

"How can we encourage our 10-year-old to adjust to living with her grandparents? My husband and I are moving to a different state for work purposes. She’ll be staying with her grandparents for the next 6+ years. We will video chat and text our child.”

"I just found out both my 12 and 14-year-old daughters are pregnant. What should I do?”

"I'm 14 years old and my parents want to put a baby monitor in my room. I'm not very comfortable with that, but my parents don't seem to care. How do I discuss this with them?"
