THOUGHTS AND THEMES: BLOG #2138 FRI MAY 25, 2018

THE MESSAGE:

Some people attend religious retreats, or meditation seminars. We can choose to become exposed to motivational speakers, preachers, teachers, professors and politicians who have something to say that is worth the attention given them.

As well as being exposed to sensible and thought provoking experiences, the individual is also forced to react to the inane thoughts of others. Sometimes these interjections are  very difficult to avoid.

Recently I was encouraged to attempt the concept of 'clearing my mind'. This was intended to render me totally thoughtless. (Some of my friends believed that I had already achieved such a mental state!).

THE BLURB:

Over the decades, music has evolved to include many different genres. One thing, however, has not changed. The 'message' that is contained in the lyrics or rhythm of the piece is often clear and compelling.

They express some of the feelings, ideas or issues of the composer and lyric writer. At times these messages can be obvious or subtle. There can be no denying the idea that some of our favourite pieces are an effective form of communication. Our options in selecting the music we listen to are plentiful. We can listen quietly or sing, dance, jump around and hoot.

For those of us who enjoy reading there are serious works on human philosophy, history, adventure and accomplishment. Or we can read the classics or find enjoyment in novels.

Television and movies present every scenario possible. drama, love stories, comedy, tragedy and science fiction.

News presentations are filled with accounts of wars, murders, crimes of passion, greed, heartache, poverty and human suffering.

What effect do these things have on our ability to process information and choose the parts that make sense to us while rejecting those that do not? Are the effects consciously received or are they subliminal? Do they affect our life permanently or are they fleeting mind assaults that hold no lasting value?

Following are some expressions of a philosophical approach to the concepts of communication and exposure to the beliefs of others:

  • Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like. -Lao Tzu
  • The snake which cannot cast its skin has to die. As well as the minds which are prevented from changing their opinions. - Friedrich Nietzsche
  • It's hard to fight when the fight ain't fair.-Taylor Swift
  • Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. - William Jennings Bryant
  • Whoever loves becomes humble. Those who love have , so to speak , pawned a part of their narcissism. - Sigmund Freud
  • I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best. - Marilyn Monroe
  • A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you. - Elbert Hubbard
  • The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference. - Elie Wiesel
  • Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans. - Allen Saunders
  • Jealousy is no more than feeling alone against smiling enemies. - Elizabeth Bowen

IDEAS FROM THE  LIGHTER SIDE:

  • Would you continue  to eat lots of natural foods after learning that most people die of natural causes.
  • Clint Eastwood believes there are two kinds of pedestrians....The quick and the dead.
  • Life, for many, is  a sexually transmitted disease.
  • A healthy lifestyle is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
  • Whenever you feel blue,  start to breathe again.
  • In the 60's some people took LSD to make the world more weird. Today the world IS weird and people take Prozac to make it look normal.
  • Would illiterate people get any intellectual benefit from eating Alphabet Soup?

THE QUESTION:

Do you still believe the mission statement you were given in high school?
