Men need the freedom to explore what they want and need in order to be happy 'in their own skin'; however, not only do they need to be aware of the mores presented and expected by others in their gender, class or skin colour, but also how these mores, when made public or presented as stereotypical humour   can be offensive and damaging to other genders, classes, cultures and groups. It's about making choices as an individual, beyond belonging to a group.

Men  have to recognize the dangers  of the following:

• A lack of emotional control
  
• Violence begets violence
  
• Failure to teach respect for authority
  
• The propensity to dominate in a relationship

• The absence of leadership in preventing abuse
  
• The impulse to laugh at inappropriate humour
  
• Remaining silent in lieu of expressing disapproval when someone makes a sexist or racist comment
  

SEXUAL ABUSE OF WOMEN BY MEN 

The Criminal Code of Canada recognizes that individuals cannot always speak up and say no. She or he may be disabled, intoxicated, intimidated or coerced into agreeing to sexual activity. If the assailant used force, threats, or lied about their actions, the courts can decide that consent was not freely given.

The definition of consent as it relates to sexual assault is found in section 153(2) and (3) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

According to the law, there is no consent in any of the following situations.

• agreement is expressed by the words or conduct of a person other than the complainant; 
• the complainant is incapable of consenting to the activity; 
• the accused counsels or incites the complainant to engage in the activity by abusing a position of trust, power or authority; 
• the complainant expresses, by words or conduct, a lack of agreement to engage in the activity; or 
• the complainant, having consented to engage in sexual activity, expresses, by words or conduct, a lack of agreement to continue to engage in the activity.

Child sexual abuse is largely a hidden crime, so it is difficult to estimate the number of children who suffer from sexual abuse. Children are often afraid to report the abuse. They fear the consequences of disclosing information and are often convinced that no one will believe them. They often blame themselves for the abuse and fear retaliation from the abuser if they tell. In addition, very young children are often unable to articulate or understand their experiences, making it difficult for them to disclose what is happening.

• Children and youth account for 61% of reported sexual assaults 
• 50% of sexual assaults on children under the age of 6 are perpetrated by a family member 
• 86% of all reported child sexual assaults are perpetrated by an individual known to the child 
• Strangers are implicated in only 5% of reported child sexual assaults, and the majority of these are against older teens
• 67% of reported child sexual assaults take place in a private dwelling
