LETTERS FROM NIGERIA

Why do some people fall so easily for a con artist's pitch? Are there really some people out there who believe that a distant relative from Nigeria has left them millions of dollars?

TECHNOLOGY

A more plausible trap centres around ones computer. Technology seems to lend itself to scams and hacks. "Your computer has been compromised, call this number to deal with the problem." Or one might receive a phone call from a chap named William, who has a thick Asian accent, and offers his assistance in exchange for all of your personal information.

CONSCIENCE

Another good 'gotcha' involves an email or six from some hot young thing, always with a new name,  wanting to do all sorts of lustful, tempting  things to your body. According to M.B. Kennedy, the dupe who responds to the invitations gets the follow-up, blackmailing email: Send bitcoins to this address or you will be busted.

THIS FROM 'HOT CHOCOLATE':

"Hello there.What's going on?
Do you still want us to talk again?
Send me your reply.
In next email I will attach you my pictures.
See you."

THE BROKEN HEART

What about falling in love? All good con artists, are exceptional judges of character and creators of drama. They are expert in making everything seem legitimate, even inevitable. Victims are vulnerable because of the need to believe, to dream and to expect that the promises are very likely to come true. These people are greedy for a certain reality. At some point in their lives, they want to feel cherished and protected.

TV ADS

"Call now 1 800 crap! That's 1 800 crap.....Ask your doctor if crap is right for you.....Know your limit, play within it.....There's never been a better time for more crap.....And remember, you don't pay unless Pretzel twists you.

Caught up in an overly-practiced pitch, we become blind to inconsistencies that seem glaring in retrospect.

RELIGION

Some believe that God resides in the spaces between our knowledge. Even as science attempts to explain more of the world, some use faith to fill in the gaps in what we know for sure. There will always be room for things that have to be taken on faith.

Nobody thinks they are joining a cult, David Sullivan explains. “They join a group that’s going to promote peace and freedom throughout the world or that’s going to save animals, or they’re going to help orphans or prevent Global Warming. But nobody joins a cult.” We don’t knowingly embrace false beliefs; rather, we embrace something we think is as true as it gets. We don’t set out to be conned. We set out to become, in some way, better than we were before.

THE ARTIST

Most are well aware of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. This heartless fraudster broke the trust of many victims. Was this simple greed by the victims or an honest attempt to invest in a lucrative business opportunity? Madoff's well practiced routine managed to convince so many!

That is the true power of belief. It gives us hope. Despair is rooted in being  overly skeptical or unwilling to accept the possibilities of the better world.  To live a good life we must be open to belief. The trick lies in taking the time and thought necessary to sort out the 'stings' and make realistic choices. Con artists are everywhere. They exist in huge numbers, and are an everlasting menace!

BECOMING RADICALIZED

Young people who live in a society that seems destined to fail are easily  duped by preachers of untold rewards and  a resurrected world.

THE QUESTION:

Why do fools fall in love?

THE ANSWER:

Does the answer lie in victims being too honest or naive? Are they too afraid of missing out on something that will make their existence more palatable? I believe that the root cause stems from a deep need to believe in a version of the world where everything really does happen for the best.
