THE MESSAGE:
NIGHT-SHIFT VICTIMS
The following are some examples of the high-profile murder and robbery cases, mostly involving teens or young adults, that have occurred across Canada. There have been several attempts by parents and loved ones to have legislation introduced that would prevent such tragedies. All of the examples below highlight the danger of working alone late at night.
1) - January, 1982 -- Laurie Lee Boyd, 16, a part-time clerk working the 6 to 11 p.m. shift at the Red Rooster store in Okotoks, Alta., was abducted, sexually assaulted and stabbed to death. Her body was discovered in a remote area of the countryside. The body had been doused with gasoline and set on fire.
Robert Edward Brown, 32, was a junk yard worker and pig farmer when arrested in 1983. Brown and James Edward Peters, 29, pleaded guilty on the sixth day of their trial for the first-degree murders of Debbie Stevens, 23, of High River and Laurie Boyd of Okotoks. The two men picked up Mrs. Stevens, whose car had run out of gas. She was sexually attacked by both men, who then beat her to death with a tire iron and left her body beside a creek. Four days later they returned and set the body on fire.
Both Brown and Peters were convicted of homicide and given life sentences. Brown later admitted to 7 more murders. He committed suicide while in prison. Peters is now allowed to go on escorted leaves from a Nova Scotia prison.
Can I have a WTF?

2) September, 1983. Barbara Turnbull an 18 year old student was left paralyzed after being shot by robbers while working at night as a clerk in a Mississauga, Ont., Beckers convenience store.
3) May, 1993 -- Night-shift clerk Lailanie Silva, 22, was abducted from a Calgary 7-Eleven store and murdered.
Silva and three of her siblings had arrived in Canada from the Philippines a few months before the killings, and their parents were days from joining them in Calgary. Trained as a teacher in her native country.
Silva was working at 7-Eleven to save money to return to school.
SILVA AND HER MURDERER |
Luc Yoland Gregoire abducted Lailanie as she worked at a northeast Calgary convenience store. He raped and strangled her before dumping her body in a ditch. Gregoire, who is now 51 years old, was convicted of first-degree murder and is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25-years at an undisclosed federal prison in his native Quebec.
4) November, 1994 Eileen McCoy, 46, was sexually assaulted and murdered after vanishing from her night shift at a Mac's store in Taber, Alta. Her body was found in a field 20 kilometres north of town. Eileen and her husband, David, had operated the Mac's store for three years. They had five children ranging in age from four to 18. For a time, husband David was the prime suspect in the case.
A month after Eileen McCoy's murder, police charged a 20-year-old man from town with the killing. Jeffrey Thurston was charged with sexual assault while armed with a weapon, kidnapping and armed robbery. He was eventually found guilty and is still in jail serving a life sentence for rape and murder.
5) March, 1997. Kelly Kaler, a 19-year-old from Vancouver, British Columbia, was murdered while working alone at night at a Money Mart outlet. She was closing the store when an intruder broke in to rob the store. There was a button to press in case of emergency but the killer prevented her from reaching it. She was strangled and stabbed to death with scissors. Kelly had been on the job for only four months.
Jason Tighe Price was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison. He had 'cased' the scene and attempted to entice Kelly to participate in a robbery of the Money Mart. Apparently she had allowed him entry to the Mart but a struggle and her murder ensued.
6) February, 2000 -- Tara Ann McDonald, 25, was working as the lone clerk during the night shift at a Subway store in Calgary when she was bludgeoned and transported to hospital where she died. The cash register, containing less than $50, was stolen.
Trevor Curtis Stang was charged with murder and robbery. He was also found guilty on charges in connection with the beating of Jaafar Omar at a bank machine earlier on the same evening that he killed Tara Anne. Stang -- a career criminal, out on bail at the time of the murder, is now serving a life sentence for killing Tara.
7) September, 2005. Jennifer Teague, 18, vanished as she walked to her nearby home after finishing a late-night shift at Wendy's in Ottawa. Her body was found two weeks later in bushes.
An Ottawa man, Kevin Davis, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to planning and committing the murder. Davis claimed he was unable to consummate the rape as he planned. He said he strangled Teague in his own bedroom while his mother slept in the next room. Davis's statement included the revelation that he hated women for rejecting him and that he was angry at the world for a range of perceived offences including being fired from his job.
8) 2006. Brigitte Serre, a 17 year old was working as a gas bar attendant on a late night shift as a fill in for a sick fellow worker. She was stabbed to death by Sebastien Simon, 19.
Simon and Brigette worked at the same Shell service station in Montreal's St-Léonard area until a few days before the attack, when Simon was fired for attempting to steal surplus money from the register.
Simon had offered to split the $125 with Serre, who refused and told her boss.

I worked at a convene store in okotoks in the 1980's. On Sunday morning 2 men came into the store and sat in the magazine stand and stared at me. Sunday mornings in okotoks back them was quiet and nobody moving around the town. These men scared me I knew I couldn't run out or come out from behind the till they would have grabbed me. For some reason I was able to phone my father and ask for help and begged him to call me right back. The rcmp came and removed them, at the time I didn't know who they were. It wasn't till they were arrested and a picture was on the front page of the paper that I realized that these two murderers were in my store. I thank God everyday for protecting me that day because if they were on there game I would be dead today.
Peters and brown were the men I write about.
Wondering if you have any more details on Trevor Stang. He was in custody with me as a young offender and I would like to reach him.
