THE WONDER OF SCIENCE

THE MESSAGE:

SCIENTIFIC THEORY

Just when you thought that doomsday warnings had peeked; along comes the latest threat by 'theorists' who are always referred to as 'scientists'. Gone are the days of the mad count from Romania, assembling body parts to create monsters.
No more are these alarmists confined to labs, with Petrie dishes and test tubes, to create the magic elixir that would produce human immortality.

Today they have expanded their concepts, with the aid of computer models, to make 'EARTH SHATTERING' predictions that are echoed, joined and promoted by international bodies, including NASA, at some grand convention at some grand venue. These preachers of doom have been somewhat exposed recently in  a edition of Canada's finical Post.

"Environmental alarmism has been eagerly embraced, in the wake of the fall of Communism, because it offers a last refuge for those whose reflexive hatred for capitalism is based on misunderstanding and moral condemnation of a system that fails to accommodate their own naïve and assuredly disastrous plans for reordering society.”

Activists clamour for a reduction of man's lust for fossil fuels; yet ignore the enormous quantities of methane gasses released by raising and consuming the meat of domestic animals. They provide very little, if any, conclusive evidence that their theories are valid. Scientific theories are replete with words and phrases that include "could, may be, appears to, if, though other factors may be involved, may accelerate, may have raised and almost certainly".

How can  scientists get away with using an oxymoron such as  'almost certain'?

Apparently there are fewer than 3% of americans who believe in ‘Man-made Global warming’. I would bet that most of them either reside in California or are famous celebrities trying to appear educated and intelligent. Another bet that I would make willingly is that the percentages evident in the US are similar to those in Canada.

EXAMPLE #1

THE SEA IS RISING! THE SEA IS RISING!
A large section of the mighty West Antarctica ice sheet has begun falling apart and its continued melting now appears to be unstoppable, two groups of scientists reported on Monday. If the findings hold up, they suggest that the melting could destabilize neighbouring parts of the ice sheet and a rise in sea level of 10 feet or more may be unavoidable in coming centuries. Supported by NASA, the beat goes on. Eagerly supported by companies and political leaders heavily invested in 'alternative energy.'
Global warming caused by the human-driven release of greenhouse gases has helped to destabilize the ice sheet, though other factors may also be involved, the scientists said. The rise of the sea is likely to continue to be relatively slow for the rest of the 21st century, the scientists added, but in the more distant future it may accelerate markedly, potentially throwing society into crisis.

EXAMPLE # 2

'THE MOUNTAINS ARE RISING! THE MOUNTAINS ARE RISING!
A so-called GeoScientist, "When humans deplete groundwater, the amount of mass or material in the Earth's crust is reduced. That disrupts Earth's force balances, causing uplift of nearby mountains and reducing a force that helps keep the San Andreas fault from slipping."

SCIENTISTS CLAIM:
  • Pumping water out of California's Central Valley is making mountains grow faster than expected, according to a team of geophysicists
  • The scientists say human intervention is affecting the natural rise and fall
  • The nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range is currently growing 3mm a year
  • Any small growth could be increasing stress on the San Andreas Fault. This in turn might be raising the chances of earthquakes in the region.

Their study was based on extensive GPS measurements in California.

Water has been pumped from California's Central Valley for more than 150 years, changing what used to be a marsh and extensive lake, Tulare Lake, into fertile agricultural fields. In that time, about 160 cubic kilometres (40 cubic miles) of water was removed—the capacity of Lake Tahoe—dropping the water table in some areas more than 120 meters (400 feet) and the ground surface 5 meters (16 feet) or more. The weight of water removed allowed the underlying crust or lithosphere to rise by so-called isostatic rebound, which may have raised the Sierra Mountain as much as half a foot since about 1860. The same rebound happens as a result of the state's seasonal rains.

EXAMPLE #3

THE EARTH IS FALLING! THE EARTH IS FALLING!
Two separate studies are providing insights into the earth-shaking consequences of the controversial gas extraction process known as fracking. Both studies confirm that processes linked to the extraction of oil and gas through hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, can trigger manmade earthquakes.
Fracking involves blasting water, sand and chemicals deep into the ground to fracture rock to obtain oil and natural gas. Energy companies are increasingly using the technique across Canada, where there is already regular seismic activity and an ever looming threat of various sized tremors.

The U.S. Geological Survey claims that a "remarkable" increase of quakes in the U.S. mid-continent since 2001 is almost certainly the result of oil and gas production. However, the lead author of the report, Bill Ellsworth, emphasized in an interview with the U.S. television network CNBC that the earthquakes aren't caused by the fracking process itself that is used to extract the gas. Rather, earthquakes have been linked to the injection of wastewater produced during fracking back into the ground in order to dispose of it.

EXAMPLE  #4

THE SKY IS RISING! THE SKY IS RISING!

  • The Thermosphere is shrinking but less heat is escaping to space. WHAT?
  • More fossil carbon in the air but there is less oxygen? How did this get measured?
  • Nights are warming faster than days. Really? Why is this significant?

THE QUESTION:
Given the size of planet Earth compared to the vastness of our Universe; Is mankind really insignificant in the unfolding of Natural Forces?

THE QUOTE:
"Global warming is controversial, of course, but the controversy is mainly over whether human activity is driving it."-Michio Kaku
