POLITICS ANYONE? BLOG #126; APRIL 11,2014

THE MESSAGE:
GOVERNMENTS MAY CHANGE BUT IN REALITY, NOTHING IS DIFFERENT. IT SIMPLY PISSES OFF A DIFFERENT SET OF PEOPLE.

There can be absolutely no doubt that, in the minds of most conservative citizens over 40, we are all controlled by 'big Governments'.  Remember the old adage: "If you are not a socialist at age 24, you have no heart.  If you are still a socialist at age 40, you have no head."

I am not convinced that modern Democratic Governments tolerate or promote class distinction. Economically speaking there is great discrepancy of income between the very rich and the extremely poor. But is this by design? Is it really an objective of government or is it a by-product of an insensitive and selfish population? Do the wealthiest people in Canada object to giving part of their income to those less fortunate? I think not. Rather they object to the huge bureaucracies and corrupt people who syphon off or waste most of these funds. For sure the system is broken; but where do we begin in fixing it. I believe that a 'Just Society' is one that takes into account the needs of every citizen.  A famous remark from the late John F Kennedy comes to mind.  "A rising tide lifts all boats".

Overlooked by most is the effect that Liberal Arts Professors have on the minds of young people. Is it any wonder that Dictatorships do their utmost to silence this segment of society? Whether it is by exile, imprisonment or firing squad, the objective is the same. Dissension is not tolerated.  Command and Control is the rule.

But what of so called Capitalistic Democracies ? Are they not equally guilty of Command and Control tactics? Do the members of Parliament or Congress actually vote according to the wishes of their constituents, or do they blindly follow the 'Party Line' and maintain power to impose their agenda?

Conservative Americans have bought into the belief that big government is bad, that high taxes are wrong, and that individualism trumps the notion of a  collective society. Socialism has become almost synonymous with evil. Consvervative critics rail against Obamacare as government intrusion and complain that Democrats have caused huge damage to the economy and the average man's will to be productive.

In Canada, there is much debate over tradition and culture. Tribalism is quite evident in much of the country. When events such as the Winter Olympics are in vogue, so is the notion of Canadian pride and unity. It doesn't take long for tribalism to rear its ugly head once they disappear.

Pierre Trudeau's 'Melting Pot' has boiled over and developed a few lumps. A wise Canadian understands that it will take one or two more generations for this problem to dissipate.

AYN RAND

Was born in Russia and emigrated to the US when her parent's home was confiscated by the communist regime. Considering her loss of property rights, is it any wonder why she is such an advocate for Capitalism?  Rand   hated  racism seeing it as a collectivist evil. At the same time, she was criticized severely for her rant against 'Native American' land claims:

"They didn't have any rights to the land, and there was no reason for anyone to grant them rights which they had not conceived and were not using. What was it that they were fighting for, when they opposed white men on this continent? For their wish to continue a primitive existence, their 'right' to keep part of the earth untouched, unused and not even as property, but just keep everybody out so that you will live practically like an animal, or a few caves above it. Any white person who brings the element of civilization has the right to take over this continent."

In spite of much criticism, Rand's concept of society can be summed up by two of her most famous beliefs. Who can argue these?

  • "From Each According to His Ability, To Each According to    His Need"
  • "To live, man must hold three things as the supreme and ruling values of his life: Reason, Purpose, Self-esteem."

DAVID DIETZ

Writes on Socialism in Scandanavia

"Today, Sweden, along with the rest of Scandinavia, is among the leaders in terms of Quality Of Life, Gross Domestic Product & Happiness Amongst the People. Sweden is a thriving economy and society based on a government of socialist principles, higher taxes, and healthy regulations. A higher tax rate of 51.1% (nearly double that in America) is accepted not only because their salaries are adjusted accordingly but because Swedes recognize and believe in JFKs adage about the rising tide.

One reason for Sweden's sound economy and predilection for creativity is the country's premier education system. Sweden has more female university graduates per capita than any other country in the world, and Swedes are considered to be among the world’s smartest people in large part because public education is guaranteed by the state, which in turn is funded by the higher tax rate.

Surely Sweden has it's numerous untold problems, but it's idyllic country built on a belief that the collective whole of society is stronger than the success of of an elite few.

Dietz goes on to qualify his praise by conceding that the Swedes accept their country's system of government because of its small size. Governing a society of nine million is unquestionably easier than trying to regulate 300+ million people.

ON THE DARKER SIDE

“Sweden has yet to come to terms with its Nazi past,” says Anna Blondell, who runs a Swedish restaurant in London. “We were neutral during the war, and our Nazi party still lives on. In fact, I think it will do well at the next election, under a different name. Many people in the older generation were very sympathetic to Nazi ideas like eugenics but, unlike Germany, we have not been so open about this.”

Certainly Sweden practised forced sterilization of women deemed unfit to be mothers until as recently as 1975. Branded low class, or mentally slow, they were kept in Institutes for 'Misled and Morally Neglected Children', where they were eventually “treated”.

In 1997, the government admitted that 60,000 women had been sterilized. Today, Swedish youth rallies and protests against the' Neo Nazi' groups.
