THE MESSAGE:
It is obvious that many forms of hatred stem from a deep feeling of anger. When hatred is rooted in the reality of past experiences it can lead to irreparable damage to our minds and souls. Much energy is expended that would be better directed to other pursuits.
In our lives there exist several situations that are worthy of hatred and strong feelings of anger. If you take some time, several of these will come into focus. The many evils of this world are quite obvious; however, it is far better to control the anger and focus our thinking on solutions to these situations. Many are beyond our control but most humans are capable of dealing with the emotions that arise in perceived evil situations. People that prove they are incapable of such control often commit crimes that are despicable and difficult to understand and forgive.
A grandfather talking to his young grandson tells the boy he has two wolves inside of him, struggling with each other. The first is the wolf of peace, love and kindness. The other is the wolf of fear, greed and hatred. "Which wolf will win, grandfather?" asks the young boy. "Whichever one you feed" is the reply.
The Destructive Power of Hate
Hate can eat you up inside and cause destruction. It is a strong emotion that can pollute your spirit and poison your mind and soul. “(Time) It can bend your knees; take you down; have you beggin' please.”(Eric Clapton).
It may be directed at animals, foods, jobs, movies, etc; however, the most destructive form is one directed toward other people.
At the heart of all hatred is blame. When one feels like they’ve been seriously wronged or victimized by someone or something their discontent and anger can easily develop into an all consuming hatred.
THE BLURB:
Sigmund Freud defined hate as an ego state that seeks to destroy the source of its unhappiness. He stresses that hatred is linked to the question of self-preservation.
Those who commit hate crimes target victims because of their race, gender, religion or sexual orientation. The crimes may involve physical or verbal assault, destruction of property, or some form of bullying.
Two men produced a free Toronto area newspaper that promoted legalizing rape. They denied the Holocaust occurred and were found guilty of promoting hatred against women and Jews. James Sears, editor of 'Your Ward News' Was convicted, along with publisher Leroy St. Germaine, of two counts of willfully promoting hatred against identifiable groups.
VICTIMS STATEMENTS
1. One Jewish resident wrote that the anti-Semitic newspaper that calls Judaism an “evil religion” and the Holocaust “Holohoax” resulted in him feeling “there is nowhere to feel safe, not in our own country, not in our own homes.”
2. A women’s group wrote about the paper’s offensive material claiming that the publication advocates spousal rape, and calls on men to be 'lone wolf gender warriors’. It normalizes violence against women and fosters fear.
3. Another comment lays out solutions for avoiding the impending danger of giving in to hatred.
- When you begin to feel hateful thoughts, stop, take a deep breath, let it out very slowly and repeat this process for four or five repetitions.
- If your feelings are directed at another person, limit your contact with this person.
- Refocus your mind eg. watch a movie, go for a walk, read a book or exercise.
James Sears at his trial in a statement of defence claimed, "several men have told me that, because of our publication, they did not commit violence. We’re just trying to open a discussion.” OOPS
THE QUESTION:
Does politics lead to hidden messages of hatred?
THE LEMON:
Awarded to Ernest Asi Afiesimama a Nigerian Environmental and Climate Scientist. Forget science and concentrate on the issues surrounding brutality against women in your country.
"Apparently, it’s the first time that someone in Canada has been convicted of the offence in relation to women, and if so, it’s a badge of shame Sears and St. Germaine richly deserve.”Christie Blatchford
