SCIENCE?? BLOG # 2180; FRI MAR 22, 2019

THE MESSAGE:

I think that the science surrounding Climate Change is exaggerated and contains too many probables, estimates or other similar descriptions of the so called data.  I further believe that this ’science’ was a good example of an effort that was perpetrated on Canadians by American entities in order to stress the 'evils of carbon’ in our country. This was motivated by and directed towards creating difficulty for the development of Canadian resources in Alberta. The Rockefeller foundations and the Koch brothers wanted to limit competition for their own fossil products.

China, the world’s largest auto market, wants to assist its own industrial economy with a long-term aim to ban the production and sale of cars that use traditional fuels. 3% of car sales must comply which is a 'drop in the bucket'. Is this a sneaky effort to publicly discredit fossil fuels and drive up the demand for their ‘green energy’ products.

Today the media focus is on reporting that the overuse of fossil fuels has caused ‘Global Warming’. Al Gore was regarded as a hero for presenting some questionable data. There has been little or no coverage of the possibility that the change in climate is due to the earth has shifting slightly on its axis. With all of the tectonic activity that has occurred over the years; could this not be a possibility?

THE BLURB:

SCIENCE??

THE TINY FRUIT FLY  HAS BECOME A GIANT AND A HERO OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER, the fruit fly, is one of the most important model organisms in scientific research.

Fruit flies share 60 per cent of human DNA, making them perfect for research in treating cancer, autism, diabetes and many other ills. Scientists in the field have won several Nobel Prizes.

If someone calls you a 'drosophila melanogaster', you should only be 60% offended!

Apparently,  you are more like a fruit fly than you might think. Billions of years ago we shared a common ancestor, and  humans and fruit flies still share approximately 75 percent of the genes related to diseases.

Fruit flies have only three main chromosomes (compared to our 23), Scientists believe this means that their test results have a good chance of meaning something to humans even though they are far simpler genetically.

Drosophila was first bred in quantity by C. W. Woodworth, at Harvard University. Through a chain of associate scientists, his ideas were introduced it to Hunt Morgan.

Thomas Hunt Morgan  and his followers used the research on several genetic discoveries of the 20th century. Hermann Muller used them to prove that X-rays were able to bring change to genes.

Human brains weigh three pounds and have 100 billion neurons; the brains of the larval fruit flies can fit inside a cubic millimetre and have 10,000 neurons. And yet its neurons are somewhat similar to our own.  A fruit fly has fewer neurons than we do, and it is simpler  but still incredibly complex in its own way.

PAIN TOLERANCE

In 2017, Dan Tracey and his fellow researchers uncovered upwards of 36 genes related to the tolerance of pain — in fruit flies called nociception.

BIOLOGY

Scientists think understanding biology is the lifeblood for translational research into human disease. They believe Drosophila research is a powerful generator of such understanding. Is the fruit fly a mini human?  Although the two species might seem very different, fruit flies share about 75% of disease-causing genes with humans. They are ideal for experimentation because they’re easy to genetically modify.

Ultimately, fruit flies and other animals can only approximate the human brain. But using animal models to understanding some of the underlying mechanisms of complex disorders might one day lead to  treatments for managing specific symptoms.
Fruit flies? Seriously? I am a total skeptic. But  many science groups get even more weird and to me are very undeserving of awards and grants.

Biologists capture super-creepy photos of Amazon spiders making meals of frogs, lizards and furry mammals.

A University of Michigan-led team of biologists has documented 15 rare and disturbing predator-prey interactions in the Amazon rainforest including keep-you-up-at-night images of a dinner plate-size tarantula dragging a young opossum across the forest floor.

Once or twice a year, A biologist leads a team of U-M researchers (faculty members, postdocs, graduate students and undergraduates) and international collaborators on a month-long expedition to the Los Amigos Biological Station in the remote Madre de Dios region of southeastern Peru.

MOTHER OF GOD IS PUTTING IT MILDLY!

Later, an opossum expert at the American Museum of Natural History confirmed they had captured the first documentation of a large mygalomorph spider preying on an opossum. The infraorder Mygalomorphae is a group of mostly heavy-bodied, stout-legged spiders that includes tarantulas. “We were pretty ecstatic and shocked, and we couldn’t really believe what we were seeing,”

Michael Grundler a grad student piped up, “We knew we were witnessing something pretty special, but we weren’t aware that it was the first observation until after the fact.”
I REST MY CASE!

THE QUESTION:

Philippine authorities said Monday that they found more than 1,500 live exotic turtles stuffed inside luggage at Manila’s airport.

WERE THEY INTENDED TO GO TO A SCIENCE LAB?

THE LEMON:

SCIENCE!

THE QUOTE:

“You are not even seeing most of what's going on in the universe. On top of that, your brain filters out much of what it receives from the environment. So that what you are consciously aware of is only a fractional representation of your universe.” ― Abhijit Naskar
