I AM SOOOO YESTERDAY! BLOG # 266; FRI DEC 07, 2018

THE MESSAGE:

As Bob Dylan and his followers in the 1960s pointed out, "The times they are a changing."

I call my alter ego 'Stupid Man'. He is the uncontrollable, raging spirit that arises in my gut whenever intolerable situations are introduced to me. Recently, I moved him from my gut and relocated him onto my right shoulder. It worked! Now, when I feel the anger and tension building up inside of me because of bad drivers, dumb commercials, politicians, human error, Blue Jay screw ups, and other 'spilled milks", I stare at my right shoulder and tell him to shut up! I am immediately relieved of the burdens of wasted energy and transformed into a calm and peaceful person.

Sometimes I find myself filled with regret over bad choices and decisions made in the past. My 'Yesterday' calls out for a 'do-over'. Of course these formerly longed-for moments are not possible. Woo hoo! Stupid Man is starting to learn!

THE BLURB:

PAROLE???

Today prison sentences are not exclusively about punishment. Melissa Todorovic has been granted day parole after serving just 11 years of her life sentence for cajoling her boyfriend into killing 14-year-old Stefanie Rengel.

Time marches on for everyone but what happens to the shattered loved ones who grieve the victims.

At her trial, Justice Ian Nordheimer, ruled that, "The puppet master is not less blameworthy than the puppet,” and decided to sentence her as an adult and not a youth. Hence he ordered a 'LIFE SENTENCE' which should also include no parole eligibility for 25 years!

In my 'Yesterday' her crime would take precedence over, age, rehabilitation and reintegration into society. I may be overreacting; however, I think that these attitudes are more prevalent today than 50 years ago. The sentence was far too lenient and should have included a 25 year limit on parole eligibility. Remember the travesty of justice that revolved around the crimes of Karla Homolka. And now, her partner in murder, Paul Bernardo is seeking parole????

Is Melissa Todorovica a changed person?
Has she been rehabilitated or has she become more cunning? Does she hope  with  a few words of feigned remorse that she is fooling those who should see through them? (easy stupid man!)

THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

I used to love the National Hockey League when it contained the original six teams! Another factor was the Junior League system of underage players being the property of their big league sponsors. For example the Toronto Marlies and St Mikes Junior teams for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The trading of players between teams was always  acceptable.  Sometimes the trades benefitted one team ahead of the other; however, they were okay with most team supporters.

In June of 1994, the Quebec Nordiques sent Matts Sundin, to Toronto. In the exchange the Leafs gave up Wendel Clark

For Toronto  fans, it was a confusing time. They were  losing Clark, who had an outstanding season prior to the trade, but they were landing someone who’d change franchise history forever. Sundin was an outstanding centre. He led by example and was stellar in both ends of the ice.

Free Agency has taken its toll on the loyal fans of the teams that lose a favourite player. The NY Islanders lost superstar John Tavares to the Toronto Maple Leafs via this route.

The 'Equalization Draft' is a joke. Look at the Edmonton and Pittsburgh franchises and the number of superstars they have had.

Today we see that the greed of players and team owners has resulted in huge salaries and large profits for seat sales. The same is true for all professional sports. Ticket prices have soared making it difficult for families to attend a game together. Should a pro athlete receive a higher salary than a President? (easy stupid man!)

POP MUSIC

It seems to me that the music of yesterday has clearly overshadowed that of the new millennium.

Of course each person has their own preference when it comes to artists and their songs. A list of my favourites would take up a lot of space and time. Here are a few in random order.

Suffice it to say that I hate rap! (easy stupid man!)

THE PRINTED NEWS

In August, 1981, the Kent Commission was appointed to investigate the Canadian newspaper industry after the closings of the Ottawa Journal and the Winnipeg Tribune.

The Commission called for tax credits to be given to newspapers whose budgets were deemed to merit government support. The news media publishers rejected the proposal almost unanimously in their stance against government intervention in the news business.

A proposal was discussed that would allow news agencies to have charitable status and receive tax deductions instead of direct aid.

Paul Godfrey, president and CEO of Postmedia, declared that this would not solve the issue. “Who would you rather give to, SickKids Hospital or Postmedia and Torstar?”

Another suggestion to preserve the printed media  promotes the concept of 'City-Owned'  Newspapers. Yet another idea would be to tax TV stations for airing annoying %*^# advertisements.(easy stupid man!)

All signs point to print media getting financial assistance from the federal government in the next budget.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said recently that he uh, was preoccupied uh, with the uh financial crisis uh, facing media in uh Canada and that the uh decision on federal funding uh, would come in the next uh budget.

CELL PHONES:

ENOUGH SAID!

HERE ARE MY TOP 10 IDEAS, REASONS OR ARGUMENTS THAT MAKE ME A 'SO YESTERDAY' LIVING IN TORONTO:

  • RECORD LEVELS OF GANGS AND KILLINGS
  • GREENIES AND MAN-MADE GLOBAL WARMING
  • INDIGENOUS WELFARE REALITIES
  • THE DECLINE IN REAL FREEDOM
  • SAFE INJECTION SITES
  • UNPLANNED OR UNWANTED PARENTHOOD AND BABY MOMMAS
  • EXAGGERATED CRIES OF RACISM
  • UNRULY COMMUNITIES
  • POVERTY AND THE HOMELESS
  • PAPER ROSES

  • SOCIAL MEDIA

Lawmakers gathered in London, England recently to question Facebook bigwigs about fake news and other security concerns.

The concern of many countries surrounds their citizen's security,  privacy and attitudes. The probe was sparked by scandals that saw personal data from millions of Facebook users invaded for political purposes. Other major issues centred on Russia’s suspected involvement in using Facebook’s platform to spread fake news during the 2016 Brexit vote and the recent election process in the USA.

Donald Trump's use of 'Twitter Comments' has long been a thorn in the side of the American people and has generated much criticism of the President.

    THE QUESTION:

    ARE YOU BIOTIC, ER.. 'YESTERDAY'?

    THE LEMON:

Awarded to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman because he is 'FAKE EVERYTHING'
