Why are Health costs in Ontario so high? Last week I stressed the need to take better care of our own self. This week I will outline some of the factors that I believe contribute to the situation.
Malpractice Insurance.
Doctors are required to carry this for obvious reasons. Replace it with some form of effective, regular oversight by the Medical Association.
Tort Reform.
Do away with large, frivolous lawsuits. Empower the Medical Association to collect reasonable fees from doctors in order to provide a pool of money to look after victims who have suffered irreparably.
Nurse Practitioners.
Create more clinics and staff them with nurses qualified to deal with many of the issues that presently are handled by a family doctor.
Education and Training.
Establish medical scholarships for any and all qualified individuals who wish to follow a career in the medical profession.
Expand the training facilities to produce more doctors.
Graduate Obligation.
Create a policy that would require all graduates from Canadian Medical Schools to practice for at least 5 years in designated parts of the country.
Prescription Drugs.
Lower the cost of all prescription drugs by eliminating tax loopholes presently available to pharmaceutical firms.
Restrict patents on prescription drugs to a two year term and allow generic prescription medicine to enter the market.
OHIP.
Allow private clinics and end the universal aspect of Provincial Health Care. There is no need to subsidize the wealthier citizens. They can afford their own health coverage.

Tony: I agree with all your points except the last OHIP:"Allow private clinics and end the universal aspect of Provincial Health Care. "
Private clinics would the end of this countries public medicare system. Rich folks can go out of country - India, USA, for extra treatment. Keep everyone in the system and make it better.
Eat less; move more.

- Nope everyone gets the same coverage. Two tier systems have not, will not and do not work.
Wealthier citizens are able to take advantage of a number of other options that prevent illness. They can afford nutritious food; gym memberships; personal trainers; bio feedback technology and take advantage of other therapeutic options not currently covered by OHIP. However family doctors, trips to the emergency room and hospital admittance should be done through a triage system and offer all Canadians the same kind of care and provide the same services when they are ill.
